This weekend I escaped Los Angeles for a couple of days and met up with my parents in Sin City to celebrate Easter.  The real reason was to see Josh Groban perform (see the entry below this one), but it was my first time (gasp!) and my parents hadn’t been there in years, so we did a little exploring.

We checked out most of the major hotels, listed below in my order of favorites:

  1.  Caesar’s Palace
  2. New York New York
  3. MGM Grand
  4. Bellagio
  5. The Venetian
  6. Paris Las Vegas
  7. Mirage
  8. Excalibur
  9. Treasure Island
  10. Mandalay Bay
  11. Luxor
  12. Harrah’s
  13. Flamingo

Everything is the city was overwhelming and gloriously overdone.  Each of the casinos is a world of its’ own, and one could go from slot machine to slot machine and slowly lose track of the world outside of the ding-ding noises, the cigarette smoke, and the free drinks.  I won almost $30 on the slot machines myself (Big Winner!), but was happy to have the drive back home across the Mojave to decompress.  But the trip, albeit brief, had it’s many highlights.  They were, for me (in no particular order):

  1. The fountain show at the Bellagio
  2. Eating gelato at the Venetian and watching a wedding
  3. A giant photo of Cary Grant hanging in my hallway at the MGM
  4. Going on a roller coaster (at New York New York) with my dad for the first time in at least ten years
  5. Seeing Josh Groban
  6. The ceiling at Caesar’s Palace
  7. The feudal cheesiness of the interior and exterior of Excalibur
  8. The trees placed randomly throughout the casino in New York New York
  9. The photo machine at the Luxor that supposedly morphs your picture and a photo of your significant other together so that you can see what your future child would look like
  10. Laughing at the women acting like they were comfortable walking around in sky high heels
